Best time to travel Sri Lanka - all about the rainy season & climate

Sri Lanka is a year-round destination, so there is no best time to travel. As the island's climates are divided into two completely different zones influenced by opposing monsoons, it depends on where you want to go and when.

Before planning your trip, consider which itinerary and areas of Sri Lanka you want to visit!

When is the best time to travel to Sri Lanka?

I recommend December to April as the best time to travel to Sri Lanka for the west or south coast and the highlands. For the east coast, the best time to travel is from April to September. Please note that the rainy season from May to September (big monsoon) is especially on the west and south coast as well as in the highlands.

Summary

Sri Lanka has good travel weather all year round, but there are certain seasons that are better than others.

From mid-December to late April, the south and west coasts and the highlands are ideal.

The north, east and cultural triangle of Sri Lanka have the best weather from March to the end of September.

October to mid-December is unpredictable and requires some weather luck.

The monsoon occurs from May to June on the south and west coasts and in the highlands, while it occurs in December, January and February on the east coast and in the north.

Between May and October, bathing is best on the rain-free east coast and between October and May on the south or west coast.

Sri Lanka has a tropical climate all year round and is always very warm or hot in the coastal areas and lowlands, while temperatures are cooler in the mountains.

Climate & Weather in Sri Lanka

Due to its location near the equator, Sri Lanka has a tropical monsoon climate all year round. Therefore, you will have sunny weather and temperatures around 20°C for 12 months a year. It can always be very hot in Sri Lanka and temperatures around 30°C are not uncommon. The hottest months are March and April. The coolest are November, December and January.

In the highlands it is always a little cooler. You should pack a jacket for this region. Especially at night, temperatures drop below 10° C here.

Due to the strong influence of the monsoon, you should decide before your trip which part of the island you want to visit.

During my visit at the end of December - beginning of January, it rained a lot and for a long time in the highlands. National parks were closed due to flooding and some places were only accessible by four-wheel drive vehicles.

Tip for a round trip: If you don't want to limit yourself to just one region and want to visit the south as well as the north and east, I advise you to choose Sri Lanka in the transition months between rainy and dry season.

South and West Coast

Due to the monsoon, the best time to travel throughout Sri Lanka is difficult to pin down. The southwest monsoon and the northeast monsoon always occur in opposite seasons.

The best time to travel to the touristy south and west is between December and April. This is the time with the most hours of sunshine, it is usually dry and there is hardly any rain. Sometimes not at all for days.

Especially around Christmas and New Year's Day, it is absolutely peak tourist season here. Accommodation is often fully booked and overpriced. The high season ends towards the end of March. The flow of tourists eases off somewhat in January after New Year.

The rainy southwest monsoon ("Yala" in Sinhala) brings extremely heavy rainfall to the west and south coasts between mid-May and the end of September. But this does not mean that it rains all day.

East and north coast

The north and east of Sri Lanka have more constant temperatures with less rainfall than other regions. .

You should avoid the east and north coasts between October and the end of April, as the northeast monsoon ("Maha" in Sinhala) brings a lot of rain. The heaviest rainfall is between November and December. You can often feel the effects in the Cultural Triangle. Roads are often flooded and national parks are closed.

The best time to travel to the east and north is between mid-May and the end of September. This is the dry season in these regions.

In the transitional periods between the monsoons, it is generally wetter because the humidity is very high. It is often cloudy and short rains can occur. Always pack a rain jacket or umbrella for a Sri Lanka trip!

Rainy season in Sri Lanka

From May to September. These are the months of Sri Lanka's rainy season - the "Great Monsoon". It is particularly pronounced on the west coast of the country, the south and also the mountainous centre of the island.

The rainy season in Sri Lanka lasts from May to September. During this time (Great Monsoon), heavy rain and monsoon rains can occur, especially on the west coast, in the south and highlands, sometimes causing flooding and disrupting traffic.

If you visit Sri Lanka during the rainy season, you should bear in mind that it is not recommended to visit certain regions of the country during this time, such as the beautiful beaches on the south coast, which are often affected by rain and storms. However, you may find better weather in higher regions such as the Hill Country, where the climate is cooler. The north and east are also good places to travel.

Best time to travel Sri Lanka by activity

Depending on what you want to do and explore in Sri Lanka, there are different "time windows". Here I have listed the recommended best time to travel to Sri Lanka by activity:

Best time to go whale and dolphin watching

Whales and dolphins can be seen on Sri Lanka's south coast near Mirissa between January and April . On the east coast near Trincomalee, the whale watching season is between June and September. On the north coast near Kalpitiya you can also join whale watching tours. Here the best time is between December and mid-April.

Best time to see turtles laying their eggs

In Rekawa near Tangalle and Kosgoda not far from Bentota you can watch turtles laying their eggs. But the animals are not always protected here. The best time to see them is between September and March.

Surfing in Sri Lanka

The best surf spots on the island are on the east coast near Arugam Bay. In the south, near Welligama, Mirissa and Ahangama, you will also find perfect surfing conditions.

On the east coast, you'll find the best conditions between April and September. On the west and south coast between October and March.

Wildlife watching and national parks

The best time to see wildlife is generally early in the morning or early evening, before it gets dark and predators in particular start hunting for food.

National parks in the Cultural Triangle were closed when I visited in December and January, as the foothills of the monsoon were clearly felt in the north: Roads were flooded and animals were hiding.

For Yala, Uda Walawe and Sinharaja Forest National Parks, the months from December to May are suitable. During the peak tourist seasons between December and February, Yala National Park in particular is hopelessly overcrowded.

Yala National Park is completely closed to tourists in the dry season from 1 September to mid-October.

Best time to visit Sri Lanka's highlands and cultural triangle

The highlands in the middle of Sri Lanka lie exactly between the climate zones. Until the end of December, sometimes the beginning of January, it can rain very often and a lot here too. The best time to visit the highlands is from January to March.

In the Cultural Triangle and highlands, there are short and heavy rains all year round, as this region receives rain from both monsoons. You must always expect rain here. Here is a short and heavy shower in Polonnaruwa:

You can always expect rain in the Cultural Triangle. Best time to travel in Sri Lanka?

If you want to travel around Sri Lanka, the transition months between the rainy and dry season are recommended. The months of February and March are ideal for this.
